Iranian-American revisits the soon-to-be-demolished site of former oriental rug business

Aryana Meghnot, 52, used to own an oriental carpet shop in the former Starlite Plaza in Sylvania. The Iran native said she began her rug business, Aryana’s Rug Gallery, because her father used to go to estate sales and collect carpets. When he asked her what she wanted to do for a living, she decided she would open a store for oriental rugs.

Her first shop was in Perry’s Landing in Perrysburg, and later she moved to Starlite, behind the former Churchill’s on Monroe Street.

She was on site of the shopping center’s demolition on Friday, July 11, 2014, and pointed out where her business sat. Her favorite part of the plaza was the colonnade of white columns that lined the walkways of the redbrick shopping center.

A  health and wellness center for ProMedica Health Systems of Toledo is set to replace the shopping center.
