What is the purpose of this project?

The purpose of this project is to attain the best possible estimate of the population of the Middle Eastern and North African community in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.


Who is involved in the survey?

The Blade is undertaking this project, and has been in consultation with community partners at The National Arab American Professionals, Toledo Chapter; The University of Toledo Urban Affairs Center; The University of Toledo Department of Sociology; The University of Toledo Middle East Studies Program.


Why participate?

The Middle Eastern and North African community in the United States does not have its own ethnic or racial category on the U.S. Census form. On official Census documents and governmental forms, people from the Middle East, the Arab world, and North Africa are considered white. Through participating in the survey, you will help give a better idea of how many people of Middle Eastern origin reside in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Aside from being counted as a distinct people, participating in the survey will help the community attain an estimate of its size, income level, education level, etc.


Who is considered Middle Eastern?

For the purpose of this project, anyone who traces their origin to the geographic boundaries of the Greater Middle East, stretching west to east from Morocco to Afghanistan, and north to south from Turkey to Yemen and the Horn of Africa. This includes Arab, Persian, Turkish, North African, Berber, Kurdish, Jewish, Israeli, Chaldean, and Afghan peoples.


Will we use or disclose any personal information?

No. This is an anonymous survey. This project will not ask participants for personal information, such as name, address, phone number, or identification numbers. Participants can leave their contact information on the survey if they would be willing to be contacted by a reporter.


Will we share any of this information with a third party (advertisers, non-profits, government)?

No. This information will not be shared with any third party. It will be compiled for articles to be published in The Blade and online at and The information will not be shared directly with any other group or individuals.
