The Survey

Mideast in the Midwest is a survey and an oral history of the Middle Eastern population in the Toledo area, conducted by The Blade.

Arabs, Middle Easterners, North Africans, and other ethnic groups from the region are not counted in their own racial or ethnic category on the decennial United States Census. They are counted in the ‘white’ category, which has led to some disagreement and an effort to create a designated category for peoples of this vast geographic region, spanning Morocco in the west to Afghanistan in the east, and Turkey in the north to Yemen and the Horn of Africa in the south.

Given the large and diverse population of people of Middle Eastern backgrounds in the Toledo area, The Blade has begun an initiative to count individuals of Middle Eastern descent in partnership with community leaders and ethnic and religious organizations.
